Herbarium I

Thanks to my colleague, I have got to know the name of some plants around our workplace. I've always wanted to be able to identify more plants. Now I want to write here those I've learned of thanks to her, so I can have my personal "herbarium".

The field elm / Olmo campestre [Ulmus minor]

A deciduous tree native to Europe. Tiny flowers and the fruit, called samara, it's flat and green. At work there is a tiny tree just outside the door in the back. When the samara dry up and fall they are a pain to sweep because they are very light and fly with every swoop. My colleague hated them because they flew in every time we opened the door. I discovered we have one growing just outside our house's fence too.

Japanese dogwood / Corniolo giapponese [Cornus kousa]

A small deciduous tree, cultivated as ornamental. Native to East Asia. It's flowers are a delicate white. There is one at work in front of the window, near the entrance. When it flowered it was quite beautiful, I specially liked looking at the white petals against the light blue of the sky. Two of the lower branches dried so I always had two recurring thoughts: "I should cut them, it would be more beautiful and tidy" "Oh, there are spiders making their home there, never mind".

Fruits in late summer

Common chicory / Cicoria comune [Cichorium intybus]

Common chicory, also native to Europe. The leaves are easier to recognize, I didn't know that the purple flowers seen in summer where of the same plant.

Annual honesty / Erba luna o monete del papa [Lunaria annua]

A small flowering plant. Particular are its fruits, round and translucent: the seeds are visible from outside. Native.
